The smell of smoke wafted through a neighborhood Monday in central Bakersfield where a vacant home caught on fire.
The Bakersfield Fire Department received the initial call at 9:23 a.m. and arrived at 3607 Dalen Place to heavy smoke and flames coming from the home.
"Engine Company 3 was first to arrive at the scene and they established an aggressive interior attack and after secondary searches it was proven to be a vacant home," Bakersfield Fire Department Chief Deputy Tyler Hartley said.
The point of origin of the house fire is unknown but initial reports are there was heavy fire in the kitchen and attic, Hartley said.
"I smelled smoke and I came outside and I could see the smoke and flames coming straight up from the home," said neighbor Novice Collins.
Damage to the home was significant and the cause of the fire is under investigation, Harley said.
