Stephen Laymance, center, has had a very frustrating time trying to buy a home for himself over the last year and a half. He is working with Realtor Gary Belter and was possibly going to put a bid on this home on Ragusa Lane. His girlfriend's daughter Nevaeh Acas is with him Wednesday while looking at this home in the Rosedale area.

Take a look at your First News for Monday, April 29.

There's a new home-buying reality. Although several factors are at play, including a shortage of homes on the market, a jump in investor activity is making it harder for people to buy a home here to live in. There are significantly more absentee buyers in the market and significantly more cash purchases, data show.

And for the second year in a row, Stockdale High School is the leader among local schools that made U.S. News and World Report's annual list of the nation's best public high schools. The magazine awards national gold, silver and bronze medal designations to nationally ranked schools. U.S. News gave silver to Stockdale, Frontier, Centennial and Ridgeview high schools in Bakersfield, as well as Cesar E. Chavez and Delano high schools in Delano.

All this and more. Watch this morning's news on "First Look with Scott Cox."
