Burgers and barbecue top the menu of the October issue of Bakersfield Life magazine out this weekend.

"It will make you hungry just looking at it," magazine Assistant Managing Editor Jorge Barrientos said Friday on "First Look with Scott Cox."

October is when the magazine produces its annual food issue.

Bakersfield Life contributor Mark Nessia checked out barbecue offerings throughout the city.

"To me good barbecue is messy barbecue," Nessia said.

He found every place he visited had its own barbecue style, with different sauces and rubs. And he visited some fairly new places to check out their specialties.

"Because variety is the spice of life and all that stuff," Cox said.

And magazine contributor Kevin McCloskey headed out to taste non-beef burgers, visiting spots including the Firehouse, Eureka!, The Padre and Muertos.

While he found some great eats, Cox argued with him, saying, "If it's not beef, it's not a burger."

October's issue also includes a preview of Halloween attractions and the Links to Life Wall of Hope of cancer survivors.

"It's just lush. It's just beautiful to look at," Cox said of the magazine.
