Maddie is a furry white and brown puppy. She's up for adoption.

Friday on "First Look with Scott Cox," Julie Johnson, who runs the city's shelter on Mount Vernon Avenue and is also Bakersfield SPCA director, said the terrier mix is a super cheerful puppy.

"She turns 8 weeks tomorrow, sheds quite a bit and has a lot of energy," Johnson said.

Maddie will not grow very big, Johnson said, and she would be a great addition to a family that has children.

Her adoption fee is $80.

With puppy season around the corner, Johnson encouraged people to donate toys to both the SPCA and the city shelter because the animals "go through toys fast." She also reminded pet owners to be sure to have their animals spayed or neutered so they don't contribute to the pet overpopulation problem.

You can visit Maddie and other pets at the City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center at 201 Mt. Vernon Ave. or call 832-7387.
