Pets and people came together Saturday as Kern County Animal Services held a ribbon-cutting and open house at the new shelter location.

The events at 3951 Fruitvale Ave. included tours, the chance to learn about Animal Services' programs — and of course the opportunity to adopt a dog or cat.

"Our goal is to open our doors and share our new shelter with the public, encourage them to utilize the many programs we offer in the community and continue to remind everyone that they can adopt some wonderful pets from our shelter," Animal Services Director Shyanne Schull said in a news release promoting the event.

Californian photographer Casey Christie shares these images from the day.
