Two sentenced in connection with robbery, officer-involved shooting

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

Two defendants who accepted plea deals in connection with an early December robbery and officer-involved shooting were each sentenced to multiple years in prison Wednesday.

Eric Miles Jr., 23, received a five-year sentence after pleading no contest to four felonies including grand theft and recklessly evading a peace officer. Co-defendant Brandon Burns, 27, was sentenced to three years for grand theft.

Charges were dismissed previously against a third defendant.

The three were each charged with several felonies in a Dec. 4 robbery that led to a chase in southwest Bakersfield in which Miles was shot.

Police said the suspects placed an advertisement on Craigslist selling an iPhone 5c. They met a buyer outside the Chase Bank in The Marketplace at 9001 Ming Ave., and robbed him of a duffel bag containing money.

The victim called police, and officers followed the suspects' car to a business complex at Ashe Road and White Lane. Two suspects got out and ran, and Miles drove directly at a police officer who'd gotten out of his car.

The officer opened fire. Police said Miles was struck but continued out of the complex, making it about 200 yards south of Stockdale Highway before stopping.

Miles was taken to Kern Medical Center with moderate injuries, and booked into jail after recovering. Burns and the third defendant were arrested later.
