Schools locked down after area robbery

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

Five south Bakersfield schools were put on lockdown shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday after a man robbed the California Water Service Company on South H Street at gunpoint, police said.

The man ran toward Ranch Market near several schools after the 9:57 a.m. robbery, and police informed school officials to be on alert.

"We called all the schools and had them put on lockdown," Sgt. Mary DeGeare said.

The schools include Planz Elementary, Plantation Elementary, Pauly Elementary, Frank West Elementary and South High School.

The lockdown at South High was called off at 10:56 a.m., a Kern High School District official said.

At 11 a.m. police could not confirm if the man had been caught.
