Worth noting: Community cleanup, toy drive coming up

Bakersfield City Councilman Russell Johnson and the Golden Valley High School Interact Club will hold a Ward 7 clean-up effort Saturday morning.
People who want to participate should meet at Golden Valley High School cleanup site at 8 a.m. A map by Johnson shows that to be an area bordered by Berkshire Road to the north, South H Street to the east and Hosking Avenue to the south.
The Junior League of Bakersfield is hosting a birthday-gift toy drive for the Jamison Children's Center, a 24-hour emergency shelter and protective custody facility for abused, neglected and exploited children before they are placed into foster care. It's soliciting new toys and other items so these kids, age infant to 17, can be celebrated on their special day.
Suggested donations include video games and gaming consoles, handheld games, skateboards, sports equipment, beauty goods for girls like perfume and makeup kits, watches, stuffed animals, Barbie/dolls, pajamas, slippers, blow-dryers/flat irons, CD players, CDs, DVDs, purses, remote-control cars, board games and card games like UNO.
The drive kicks off 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, outside Sequoia Sandwich Co. at the Northwest Promenade near Target (9160 Rosedale Highway).
Additional collection bins will be placed at several local businesses from Oct. 8-19: Harding Elementary, 3201 Pico Ave.; Bakersfield High School, 1241 G St.; Body XChange Northwest Sport Club, 2749 Calloway Drive; State Farm, 1811 Oak St., Suite 155; R&D Leather, 6801 White Lane; Saint Luke's Anglican Church, 2671 Mount Vernon Ave.; Red Lobster, 8180 Rosedale Highway; City Real Estate Group, 2114 F St.; and M.D. Atkinson, 1401 19th St.
State Sen. Jean Fuller , R-Bakersfield, will host a town hall meeting to discuss water utility issues. Officials from the California Public Utilities Commission and the California Water Service Company will also be there.
The meeting is 6-7:30 p.m. Monday at the Kern River Valley Hall & Senior Center, 6409 Lake Isabella Blvd. in Lake Isabella.
It's to let community members learn about water rates, regulation and other background information they might find useful, her office said.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County has been selected to receive a $7,000 community grant from the Best Buy Children's Foundation to support the Keystone Club at the Armstrong Youth Center -- Boys & Girls Club. The grant is awarded in partnership with the local Best Buy store to support programs that help youth excel in school, engage in their communities and develop life and leadership skills. The money will help underwrite the Keystone Club for underserved teens in East Bakersfield.
Assemblywoman Shannon Grove, R-Bakersfield, is accepting applications for interns in her Sacramento and Bakersfield offices.
Paid and unpaid internships are available to high school graduates age 18 and older who can work for a minimum of six weeks.
