Worth noting in the community: Women's Equality Day, Assistance League event, lottery winner

The League of Women Voters of Kern County will host Women's Equality Day at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Seven Oaks Country Club, 2000 Grand Lakes Ave.

Speakers Cathy Abernathy and Gene Tackett will discuss Ladies' Day in California Elections. Light refreshments will be served and reservations can be made by calling the League Line by Wednesday at 634-3773. The cost to attend is $12, which is payable at the door.

 

Christine's is sponsoring Brighton Bunco Charity Night to raise money for Assistance League of Bakersfield, a nonprofit organization that helps people in need achieve a better quality of life.

The night of fun and games will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 2. If you are interested in attending, sign up at Christine's in the Stockdale Fashion Plaza at 4915 Stockdale Highway. The cost is $25 per person and checks can be made payable to Assistance League. For information on this event, call 834-3068.

 

John Ballinger is one lucky man from Ridgecrest who won $667,352 in Friday's California Lottery. Ballinger, a 38-year-old military aircraft refueler who works at the nearby China Lake Navy Base, played Mega Millions.

According to a news release from California Lottery News, Ballinger and his wife plan to use the money to pay off their mortgage, get out of debt and set up college funds for their two children.
