Crime shorts: Man attacked neighbors with hedge trimmers
By The Bakersfield Californian
On Wednesday, at 8:34 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a trailer park at 123 McCord Av. in Oildale for a possible drunk subject bleeding and creating a disturbance in the trailer park.
Upon arrival, they saw the subject, covered in blood, wildly swinging hedge trimmers at other residents of the trailer park. Deputies ordered the subject to drop the hedge trimmers and he complied. As Deputies were directing the subject toward their location he suddenly ran into the trailer of the residents he was attempting to assault. A deputy deployed their Taser stopping the suspect.
Medical aid responded and determined the suspect had a head injury caused prior to deputies arrival. The subject was transported to Kern Medical Center by ambulance.
Investigation revealed the subject had sustained a head injury from an unsuccessful suicide attempt prior to deputies dispatched to the scene. The subject was a white male fifty-five years of age who had recently moved into the trailer park. He is listed in critical condition but not life threatening. No arrests have been made.
Investigation is continuing.

On Wednesday, the Incident Review Board convened to consider the discharge of Deputy John Powell's weapon. The discharge occurred during a struggle over the weapon with a suspect, Manuel Sanchez, on April 12, 2009.
The Incident Review Board consisted of Chief Deputy Willy Wahl, Chief Deputy RoseMary Wahl, Chief Christopher Speer, Commander Francis Moore, and Commander Dan Leper.
After a review of all facts in this case, the Incident Review Board determined that the discharge of a weapon was within Sheriff's Office policy.
Editors note: Powell had allegedly found Sanchez in a car with an underage girl in a remote part of the county. Powell tried to take the girl home and Sanchez attacked, according to previous reports. Powell fought him off and shot a Taser at Sanchez, who escaped and was later arrested, according to previous reports.
