If you've ever wanted to go fishing but don't know how to catch a fish or even what supplies to buy, there's a class that will teach you the fundamentals.

Friday on "First Look with Scott Cox," Steve Merlo, The Californian's outdoors columnist, talked about an upcoming class he will teach. "Let's Go Fishing" is offered through the Levan Institute at Bakersfield College.

During the three-hour indoor class, Merlo will demonstrate the equipment to use, explain what bait to buy and share other fishing 101 essentials.

"The old-style fishing that people learned from their grandparents isn't as productive as it use to be," Merlo said.

The class is from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays starting Feb. 18. The cost is $15. For more information, visit www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/levaninstitute.
