Flames shot into the air in the Alta Vista neighborhood Monday after the driver of a road grinder hit a 3-inch natural gas line, causing the vehicle to catch on fire and leading to the evacuation of several nearby homes. The incident caused 300 people to lose power.

And the Legislative and Litigation Committee of the Bakersfield City Council voted down two proposals to allow residents to keep chickens in their urban neighborhoods.
