Dr. Vipul Dev talked about everything from plastic surgery to wound care to obesity on "First Look with Scott Cox" Friday.
The board eligible plastic surgeon said that "when it came to being a plastic surgeon, I really wanted to give back to the community because I wouldn't have been a plastic surgeon if it wasn't for Kern County."
Host Scott Cox asked Dev about the extent and kinds of injuries suffered by the bombing victims in Boston.
"Those are what we call blast injuries," Dev said, explaining that they destroy soft tissue, and also explode hard tissue.
People who must undergo amputations can be fitted with a prosthesis, he explained.
"They have some of the world's leading health care institutions up there (in Boston) and when it comes to basic fundamental things to take care of someone, it has to be the same across the board, across the country, even in Bakersfield," Dev said. "And that, what they're doing, is something that we would do here if we had a natural disaster or a manmade disaster like that happen."
He said local surgeons have the capability, technology and know-how to take care of those patients.
