Prosecutors have charged a suspected drunken driver with second-degree murder in connection with a Jan. 3 crash in southwest Bakersfield that killed a 22-year-old woman.

Alex Anthony Rubio, 24, is also charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing bodily injury, and hit and run causing death or permanent serious injury.

Police said Rubio ran from the scene of the crash that killed Princess Flores Almonidovar, a respiratory therapist at San Joaquin Community Hospital who was the primary breadwinner for her family. He was found shortly afterward in a nearby neighborhood.

Officers said he'd been speeding at the time of the crash.

The 3:05 a.m. collision at the intersection of Ming Avenue and New Stine Road destroyed Almonidovar's vehicle, spreading debris across the roadway. The intersection remained closed until 2 p.m.

Almonidovar's death led to an outpouring of grief on social media and a candlelight vigil attended by more than 100 people.

Court records show Rubio had a bench warrant out for his arrest after failing to show for a hearing on misdemeanor charges of spousal abuse and petty theft.

Rubio is scheduled to be in court Friday. He's out of custody after posting $17,000 bond.
