A quarter century on, Bakersfield's annual Fog Run -- a pair of footraces and a breakfast at Lake Ming -- carried on a tradition Saturday of helping local victims impacted by crime.

While the event drew far more than the two dozen runners or so who participated in the original 5k in 1990, its goal remains the same: raise money for the Victim/Witness Auxiliary Board.

The organization's emergency fund provides informal loans, few of which are ever repaid, to crime victims and others in need of money to relocate, pay for funerals and medical expenses or upgrade their home security.

Race founder Mic Hall, a retired Kern County probation officer, estimated race sponsors have contributed at least $80,000 for the fund. With participation topping 900 people in recent years, the event has become the board's primary fundraising tool. "Everybody's welcome," Hall said.
