As the holiday adrenaline kicks in and shopping for the perfect gifts continues until after Christmas, many people tend to be distracted and they don't pay attention to their surroundings.

While you are out shopping, so are criminals.

Wednesday on "First Look with Scott Cox," Bakersfield Police Department crime prevention specialist Corina Ortiz provided tips on how to prevent becoming another victim.

"Have a plan of what you are going to buy and only carry the exact amount of cash you are going to spend; don't have more," Ortiz said.

As you're walking from the mall to the parking lot, Ortiz recommended people put away receipts, wallets, phones and any other form of distraction.

Keeping your head up and looking at your surroundings is important so you are aware if anybody is following you, she said.

"Make eye contact with others and pay attention to details of the person because if anything does go wrong, you can describe the person," Ortiz said.

If you're shopping and something doesn't feel right, follow your intuition.
