No charges in basketball player's death
By The Bakersfield Californian
The Kern County District Attorney’s office will not be filing charges against a man accused of stabbing a former Bakersfield College basketball player to death.
There will be no charges because there was evidence that Marquell Watkins acted in self-defense in connection with the death of 27-year-old Steve Carter, said Deputy District Attorney Lisa Green.
Carter was stabbed in the neck outside of a Fastrip market on 34th and Q streets at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday. Watkins later turned himself in to police.
Green declined to give further details about the evidence because she said those details are not open to the public. She said the investigation was very thorough.
Carter was a 1999 East High graduate who went on to play basketball at Bakersfield College.
Carter averaged 17.9 points and 14 rebounds per game as a senior at East High to earn All-Area honors by The Californian.
