Let's go Drillers, let's go!

Students, teachers and city officials cheered and clapped as the Bakersfield High School football team made its way toward the charter bus that would take the athletes to the Division I state bowl championship Friday afternoon.

With the BHS drumline playing in the background, the athletes got on the bus one by one, some wearing their jerseys, others wearing BHS sweaters.

And every one of them had a big smile on their face.

"The Drillers are representing our city," Mayor Harvey Hall said after giving the boys a brief, final pep-talk. "We always had to look behind us and now we are at the front of the pack, as leaders, and they are looking at us."

Hall wished the team good luck and reminded them to remember the celebration of last week's game against Mission Hills, where they left with a 35-28 victory.

Wearing her BHS sweater and holding on to a blanket, Joana Bueno, 17, was excited to get on the rooter bus and see the game live.

"There's a lot of school spirit and I know the team will be victorious tonight," Bueno said.

Also present to say good luck to the team was Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield.

McCarthy will be at the game at 8 tonight at the StubHub Center in Carson, cheering the team on.
