Country singer Lauren Ashley appeared on "First Look with Scott Cox" Thursday to share her music, performing her song "Chasing the Day."

The Highland High graduate will compete against 10 others in the 32nd Annual Texaco Country Showdown at 7 p.m. Friday at the Bull Shed, 2400 Camino del Rio Court.

"When do you ever get the opportunity to go out somewhere in Bakersfield and see 11 different really solid country acts in one night and it's all free. So this is a hot ticket in town, I think," Californian Eye Street Editor Jennifer Self said.

Ashley said when she first wanted to play, she called -- at age 12 -- "American Idol" finalist and Bakersfield resident Amy Adams for vocal lessons. Monty Byrom produced her CD.

Self and reporter Matt Munoz also talked about everything from the Emmy nominations to upcoming performances and people in the arts community.
