Lung disease is America's number three killer, responsible for one in six deaths. Statistics show 17 percent of Kern County's population has asthma. The national average is 11 percent.
"It's a very significant difference," Tami Lopez, area director for the American Lung Association, said Wednesday on "First Look with Scott Cox."
To help make an impact in the fight against lung disease, you can strap on your walking shoes and join locals at the Fight for Air Walk fundraiser happening April 5 at Yokuts Park.
Kelly Macy, local lung association ambassador, knows first hand how important it is to raise awareness for the disease.
"I grew up among lung disease," Macy said.
Macy developed asthma after moving to Bakersfield and struggled with severe symptoms. In 2012, Macy lost her mother to lung cancer.
Macy has already organized her own team to walk at the Fight For Air Walk and encouraged locals to sign up and participate.
