Bakersfield police shot a suspected robber on Ashe Road Wednesday afternoon after he slowed his car to let three other suspects escape and then tried to speed away.

Roadways were closed for hours where the shooting occurred in the area of White Lane and Ashe Road as officers diverted traffic along other streets.

The suspect suffered moderate wounds from being shot, and both he and a second suspect were in custody. Two others remained at large Wednesday evening.

The incident began about 3:20 p.m. at The Marketplace when a man who had set up a meeting online to buy an electronic device from several people was then robbed by them, police Sgt. Joe Grubbs said. The victim was uninjured.

Following the robbery, the suspects fled in a blue Nissan Maxima that police followed to a business complex at Ashe Road and White Lane.

Grubbs said three suspects ran from the car at the complex, and the driver made a sharp turn to get out of the complex and onto Ashe Road. An officer opened fire on the driver in front of a Meineke Car Care.

The suspect managed to drive away, but pulled over on Ashe about 200 yards south of Stockdale Highway. Grubbs said the suspect suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital.

One of the suspects who ran was arrested shortly afterward and also was taken to the hospital for minor injuries he suffered jumping fences and scrambling to get away.

Grubbs said he was unaware as of early Wednesday evening whether either of the suspects taken into custody were armed.

Police closed Stockdale Highway in both directions at Ashe Road while streets leading into White Lane were also closed. A helicopter flew over the surrounding area while dozens of officers spread out through apartment complexes and neighborhoods.
