Unmanned systems on stage at Inyokern event

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

If you've ever wanted to learn more about the technology of Unmanned Aerial Systems, otherwise known as drones, Inyokern Airport has a deal for you.

Amazing aerial demonstrations, static displays, kids' activities and entertainment will be in full force at Cal UAS Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the airport in northeastern Kern County.

Eileen Shibley, who has been leading an effort to secure a test site designation for the airport from the Federal Aviation Administration to help integrate UAS technology into civilian airspace, promises a spectacular day. Event-goers will even get to see a blimp close-up in one of the hangars.

Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake, adjacent to nearby Ridgecrest and Inyokern, is a center for drone research, she said, and local contributions to aerospace advancement are a point of pride in the region.

Inyokern Airport hopes to become a lynchpin in the advancement of civilian uses for unmanned systems, and Saturday's event is an opportunity to learn more about the many applications for this technology in the commercial sector.

Catered food will be available for purchase. Admission and all activities are free.
