KC Mitchell is a single amputee U.S. Army veteran. The Afghanistan veteran has gone through 38 surgeries and spent two years in recovery.
"When my daughter was born, I told myself that I had to learn to walk before she did, and that pushed me," Mitchell said Wednesday on "First Look with Scott Cox."
After learning to walk again, Mitchell got involved with the Kern County Wounded Heroes Fund and said he received a lot of support from them.
Wendy Porter, executive director of the fund, said the past five years have been dedicated to providing assistance to service men and women returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan.
To continue to provide funding for the organization, a Salute To Our Local Heroes will be held at the Kern County Fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and anyone under 5 years old goes in free. Admission includes a dinner.
"Come out and support your local veterans and say hello to them," Porter said.
