The Purple Heart is the most recognized symbol of combat injury. It's not an award for which service members are recommended, rather it's an award which is issued after specific criteria is met.

Thursday on "First Look with Scott Cox," Leon Thomas, a member of the Bakersfield Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, talked about a fundraiser that will help raise money for the 2014 military ball.

The Purple Heart foundation provides veterans assistance in anything from housing to scholarships for families.

"We will be honoring Vietnam veterans at the military ball because these guys deserve this and much more," the 82-year-old purple heart recipient said.

For $10, you can get a philly cheese steak sandwich, chips and a drink. The fundraiser will be from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 8 at 1707 Westwind Drive.

There will be a display of war photos and purple heart recipients themselves.

"We have some unsung heroes who never say much so just come over and talk to them," Thomas said.
