These groups need your volunteer help

The Mayor's Freeway Cleanup is 8-11 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers help clean up the freeway on/off ramps, making our city a more beautiful place to drive. This opportunity is open to teens looking for class credit for volunteer hours. Vests, helmets, gloves, pickers and water are all provided. Call Keitha Turner at 326-3770 for more details.

Kern Adult Literacy Council is hosting tutor training for new volunteers on 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21. It's in critical need of volunteers for reading, math, GED, ESL and more. All skill levels are needed. You can help a child struggling with reading/math, a young adult striving to earn a GED, an adult wanting to speak/understand English and many other individuals. It only requires one hour per week of your time, according to your schedule. Call 324-3213 to reserve your seat for training.

Californian Against Slavery is seeking volunteers interested in addressing the issue of human trafficking. Each year in the U.S., 100,000 to 300,000 minors are at risk of being exploited. California is a hot spot for domestic and international human trafficking because of its large population, international borders, large economy, extensive ports and metropolitan regions. Volunteers are being recruited to work four hours Saturday or Sunday at Valley Plaza, center court in front of Kevin Jewelers asking shoppers to sign petitions for tougher trafficking laws. MARE (Mastering Abilities Riding Equines) is looking for volunteers who would enjoy working with children and horses. Assist riders on horseback as a sidewalker, stable maintenance worker, horse groomer or leader, yard worker, office helper, event helper and much more. No horse experience is necessary; you will be trained. Kern Medical Auxillary is looking for volunteers for the gift shop, snack bar, information desk, emergency care center, surgery family waiting room, cuddle program and more. Optimal Hospice Care invites you to its springtime new volunteer orientation 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 21.
