Local air pollution-control officials have issued a health "cautionary statement" saying expected gusty winds could kick up unhealthy concentrations of dust.
The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District statement is in effect today through Friday in several counties including the valley portion of Kern.
The district warns that the particulate matter that may be produced can cause serious health problems such as aggravating lung disease, triggering asthma attacks and bronchitis, and increasing the risk of respiratory infections.
Older adults and children should avoid prolonged exposure to the dust or heavy exertion, depending on their health status, the air district said.
