Worth noting in the community: River restoration, MLK Day clean-up and more

The Audubon Kern River Preserve is seeking volunteers Saturday morning to help renovate nature trails and restoration sites that were damaged during the recent storms, according to a news release.

Volunteers should meet at 7:55 a.m. at the Kern River Preserve headquarters at 18747 Highway 178 in Weldon.

A joint community service effort honoring Martin Luther King Jr. will take place Monday morning, when many schools and businesses will be closed in observance of the day honoring the civil rights leader.

The clean-up event will begin at 7 a.m. at Martin Luther King Jr Park (1000 S. Owens St.) and continue with a luncheon at the Stop the Violence headquarters (1627 Virginia Ave.).

The activities are sponsored by Stop the Violence, Cal State Bakersfield, Boys & Girls Club of Kern County and the Kern County Black Chamber of Commerce.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County plans to host an informational meeting about its mentoring program at 5 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Armstrong Youth Center in Bakersfield.

The organization recently received a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to support its mentoring efforts, according to a news release. It is actively looking for adults who can meet weekly with club members after school.

The program is expected to run at the nonprofit group's Niles Street site as well as at its Frazier Park and Lamont locations.

The Alzheimer's Disease Association of Kern County will hold its second annual "Rock-A-Thon" fundraiser Feb. 12, according to a news release.

The event, which will take place at Carriage House Estates (8200 Westwold Drive), will award prizes to teams who compete in a series of rocking-chair activities.

The $250 team entry fee will support local families that are served by the nonprofit group.
