The suspect charged with murder and attempted murder in a 2007 shooting that badly injured a woman and killed her 26-week-old fetus pleaded not guilty to the charges Monday afternoon.
Justin Michael English, 27, was ordered held on $1.5 million bail. A pre-preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 17.
A man who attended the arraignment declined comment beforehand, and several people declined to comment afterward. A group spoke briefly with prosecutor Andrea Kohler before leaving the courthouse.
English was arrested Thursday in connection with shooting his then-girlfriend, who was carrying his child, according to Kern County sheriff's deputies. The shooting happened about 6 p.m. July 1, 2007 at an apartment in the 2700 block of South Union Avenue.
The girlfriend suffered numerous gunshot wounds and was taken to Mercy Hospital, where it was determined the fetus had died, deputies reported. The woman has permanent injuries as a result of the shooting.
