Twenty teams of students from Kern County junior high and middle schools participated Saturday in the first annual Bakersfield Christian High School Knowledge Bowl.

First place among fifth and sixth grade teams went to St. John's Lutheran School, with Norris Elementary School finishing second.

First place for seventh and eighth grade teams went to Stockdale Christian School, while St. John's finished second.

Each team had five students, with no more than three from any one grade.

Students used buzzers, and timers measured their speed of response to questions about English, math, science and social studies topics. Winners received medals and each first-place team was awarded trophies to keep until the 2015 Knowledge Bowl.

"So often students work hard in school, are diligent in their homework and yet get little public recognition," said BCHS President Stephen Dinger. "BCHS wants to shine the spotlight on academic efforts and success, and we want to do so when students are still in grade school."

The event was made possible by support from Mission Bank.
