Wasco council members vote to oppose high-speed rail
By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN
Wasco City Council members gave California's high-speed rail project a thumbs-down Tuesday night, voting 3-0 to oppose the project "as currently proposed."
City Manager Alan Christensen said the resolution will be forwarded to a myriad of politicians, including state and national legislators, high-speed rail project officials, California's governor and even the president of the United States.
"We'll hope that eventually the powers that be at the state will see the light and relook at the project," Christensen said.
Two council members who did not attend Tuesday's meeting previously expressed support for the resolution, Christensen said.
A staff report on the proposed resolution cited recent information suggesting "major problems" with the project, such as uncertain financing, a questionable draft environmental review and persistent legal challenges.
