High school district wants to hear from you

By The Bakersfield Californian

The Kern High School District has scheduled workshops to hear what you have to say about a new set of strategic goals for its schools.

“Maximizing student success” is the title for the district’s current goals, but board President Joel Heinrichs would like to see more “actionable” items for the next strategic plan.

The development of a career technical education program, planned to start next year, is an example of goal the board can work toward, Heinrichs said.

A few of Heinrichs’ ideas: Online learning through virtual high schools; more focused learning opportunities, perhaps through charter schools; and allowing students to move to schools with programs they want to do.

On Monday the board will listen to ideas from the public. Friday it will listen some more, and discuss the ideas. The board plans to finalize priorities for the next two years at its March 2 meeting.
