Local defense attorney appointed as judge

A Kern County judge's seat left open by a retirement has been filled with an appointment by Gov. Jerry Brown.
Brian McNamara, a Bakersfield defense attorney, was appointed to a judgeship after the retirement of Judge Robert J. Anspach.
"Brian has incredible legal experience, sharp intellect and a strong commitment to community," said Evan Westrup, a spokesman for the governor's office. "We're confident the state and Kern County will be well served."
McNamara beat out a large pool of applicants for the appointment, Westrup said, although he would not specify how many.
McNamara could not be reached for comment.
McNamara earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Stirling in Scotland, according to a news release from the governor's office. He earned a doctorate degree and master's degree in sport management from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. And he earned his law degree from Newport University School of Law.
Since 1986, he has been a professor of business law and management information systems at Cal State Bakersfield, according to the news release. Prior to that, he was a lecturer in computer science at the Solihull College of Technology and the Bournville College of Further Education.
According to the governor's office, compensation for the position is $178,789.
