Worth noting in the community: Philanthropists honored, more

Kern Community Foundation honored Marvin and Nadene Steinert with its first Spirit of Philanthropy award Nov. 14 as part of National Philanthropy Day and National Community Foundation's Week.
The couple recently celebrated 70 years of marriage and was recognized for a lifetime of giving to their church and other charitable causes, according to a news release from the foundation.
"Kern Community Foundation joined more than 700 community foundations across America celebrating Community Foundation Week," Jeff Pickering, president and CEO, said in a statement. "Mr. and Mrs. Steinert's lifetime giving, along with their most recent gift of real estate, were worthy of national recognition. We are fortunate to be able to celebrate by honoring them and their commitment to local charitable causes."
Marvin is a past director of the foundation. While on the board of directors, he established the Marvin Steinert Family Charitable Fund. The couple is a member of the foundation's Legacy Society, according to the news release.
A Veterans Resource Center is slated to open Tuesday at Beale Memorial Library, according to the California Department of Veterans Affairs and the California State Library.
The center, to be staffed by trained volunteers, aims to direct veterans and their families to benefits and services they've earned through veterans' service, a news release from the veterans department said. Some of the volunteers are veterans.
The one-year pilot program, which includes one library each in San Diego and Redding, could be expanded to other libraries if it's successful.
The CHiPs for KiDs Toy Drive , an effort to collect toys for needy and hospitalized children, began Monday and continues through Dec. 12, according to a California Highway Patrol news release. The toys go to children in Kern County up to age 16.
The public can donate new, unwrapped toys at the CHP office on Buck Owens Boulevard, Motor City (in the Auto Mall), The Bakersfield Californian, Keller Williams on Olive Drive and the United Way.
There will also be toy drop-off events from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 7 at Motor City, 3101 Pacheco Road at the Auto Mall, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 8, the CHP news release said.
Students in Garces Memorial High School's Campus Ministry Class led a canned food drive that collected a record 11,117 cans for St. Vincent de Paul Center's pantry for the needy, according to a campus news release.
The annual service campaign ran Nov. 1 to 16. The goal this year was to collect 10,000 cans of food.
An Agricultural Export Symposium will be held Dec. 5 to help producers learn about the latest trends that impact their work.
Registration stars at 7:30 a.m., with the program from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, 1725 Eye St. Tickets are $30 for chamber members, and $60 for non-members. Register online or call 327-4421.
Chevron has donated $10,000 to the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to support its efforts in 2013, according to a news release from the chamber.
Presented at a Thursday ceremony, the money makes Chevron the main sponsor of the chamber's business services and events next year, including business seminars for both English and Spanish-speaking owners. Chevron's support will also help the chamber with annual fundraising events, including the annual Menudo Cook-Off and a backpack giveaway, the news release said.
Kern Council of Governments is accepting nominations for its 2012 Regional Awards of Merit through Nov. 30.
The awards recognize projects and people who have improved the quality of life in the area in the last year, according to an announcement from the council.
