Both lanes of Highway 178 in the Kern River Canyon were open at about 4 p.m. Friday following rock and mud slides that closed the road last week.
Though the road is clear, drivers should expect delays due to holiday traffic, Caltrans cautioned. The agency urged travelers to drive carefully and pay attention to signs.
Single-lane closures may resume next week for “follow-up repairs still stemming from this rock slide,” including guardrail and shoulder work, said Jose Camarena, Caltrans public information officer.
Multiple rock slides closed the highway on the evening of Monday, Aug. 19, prompting longer commutes for those who live in the Kern River Valley and work in Bakersfield. One lane reopened Friday, Aug. 23.
Caltrans thanked “the residents, businesses and commuters in Bakersfield and the Lake Isabella region for their patience during this exercise.”
