The American Heart Association and Houchin Community Blood Bank have united this month for one reason -- to spread awareness about the No. 1 killer in Kern County.
Thursday on "First Look with Scott Cox," Carola Enriquez from Houchin and Cori Kitchen of the heart association talked about the "Hearts United Blood Drive" social happening Thursday.
"Heart patients need blood transfusions, so it goes hand in hand," Enriquez said.
For every person who donates blood through the month of February, the blood bank will provide a monetary donation to the heart association.
Kitchen said it is important to bring attention to those living with heart disease, but talking about preventative measures is also key.
"A healthy diet, exercise and not smoking can help," Kitchen said.
Tonight's event is from 4 to 7 p.m. at 11515 Bolthouse Drive. For more information, call 323-4222 or visit www.hcbb.com.
