These volunteer groups need your help

The Volunteer Center of Kern County would like to take this opportunity to let local volunteers know how thankful we are for the dedication and commitment you continue to exhibit on behalf of our community. The Blessing Corner is requesting assistance in serving a holiday meal Thursday, Nov. 24, between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. It's located at 101 Union Ave. (the corner of Union and 1st Street). It also needs volunteers on an ongoing basis with miscellaneous food and clothing distribution tasks on Fridays such as sorting food and clothing, signing up individuals in need of services and/or providing some necessary facility maintenance. YMCA is looking for coaches for its Winter Basketball League and Winter Soccer League. If you enjoy getting involved with sports, have the patience and willingness to coach kids, it would love to talk with you. You must commit to one practice per week and games played on Saturday mornings. Coaches must be at least 16 years old. The YMCA also is looking for referees for those sports. Experience would be helpful but not necessary; it is willing to train. Games start after Thanksgiving. Contact Alex Haver at 837-9622 for more details.
YMCA also has a volunteer position available in its office for general office work one day per week. It's time is flexible, so you could choose the day. Contact Clete Harper at 837-9622 to discuss your schedule.
Goodwill is looking for additional volunteers for the holidays working in its retail environment. Volunteers are needed in various areas of the store and will acquire a variety of retail skills. Youth must be at least age 16. Listing volunteer experience on your resume is always a plus. Call Anita Orozco at 837-0595.
The Bakersfield National Cemetery Support Committee is inviting everyone to attend its Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Bakersfield National Cemetery 9 a.m. Dec. 10. Volunteers are needed for various duties, including placing wreaths in honor of fallen heros or in memory of loved ones. Contact Thomas at 379-7363.
Optimal Hospice will hold a volunteer orientation Jan. 18. Plan on starting the new year off on the right foot by becoming a volunteer. Call to reserve a seat, 716-4000.
United Way of Kern County is gearing up for the 2012 tax season with its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Tax time is just a few weeks away and your help is desperately needed to assist local seniors, individuals and families prepare their income taxes. Call Rachel at 834-1820 for more information on training. Tax preparers, greeters, assistants and various other volunteer positions are available.
