Driver impaled in fatal car accident

A man was fatally impaled and his passenger moderately injured when a 2001 silver GMC Yukon crashed in southeast Bakersfield 1:19 a.m. Saturday,according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver was speeding when, for unknown reasons, he veered to the left and collided with a chainlink fence along the west side of Dororthy Street just south of Pioneer Drive, police said.

The impact dislodged the top rail of the fence and propelled it into the GMC. It penetrated the windshiled and the driver's chest, killing him, police said.

The identity of the occupants of the car was withheld pending notification of family.
