Passengers in Fatal I-5 Collision from Oxnard

The two passengers killed and five injured in a crash that jammed Interstate-5 early this morning were from Oxnard, according to the California Highway Patrol. Daisy Alfaro, 17, and Jesus Alfaro, 24 --both of whom likely weren't wearing seatbelts--were ejected from the car and died.
The incident occurred about a mile south of I-5 and Bear Mountain Boulevard in Kern County. Both sides of the I-5 were backed up from the 5 a.m. crash to about 9 a.m., spurring several other non-fatal collisions.
The Alfaro family had been traveling from Oxnard to Reno for Thanksgiving, Sgt. Doug Peters said.
"It's a real tragedy," Peters said.
Miguel Alfaro, 36, was driving the 2004 Chevy Trailblazer northbound in the fast lane at about 70 mph when the car drifted left toward the center divider. He tried to correct it, steering to the right, but lost control of the car. The vehicle overturned and landed in the southbound lane.
The passengers who died at the scene were sitting in the right rear seat and the back cargo area, Peters said. The other family members--Diana Alfaro, 35, Matthew Alfaro, 1, Maximus Alfaro, 3, and Miguel Alfaro Jr., 13, were transported to Kern Medical Center with moderate to minor injuries.
