Did you know that Col. Thomas Baker came to what would become Bakersfield in a boat from Visalia in 1862?

That's among the fun facts the authors of "Colonel Baker's Field: An American Pioneer Story" shared Thursday morning on "First Look with Scott Cox."

The biography was written by retired teachers Judy Salamacha and Sandy Mittelsteadt, who were introduced to each other by businessman Morgan Clayton at the local youth Leaders in Life leadership conference.

Of Col. Baker, Mittelsteadt said, "He had a beautiful personality and he was the best promotor for Bakersfield."

Salamacha said "he was an adventurer."

Chris Brewer, a descendant of Baker, helped with the book, which can be purchased at Russo's Books and the Kern County Museum.
