Take a look at your First News for Friday, April 26.
The first round of the NFL Draft came and went Thursday night with only one native Californian selected -- UCLA defensive end Datone Jones, who went to the Packers at No. 26.
But among the many who could be selected Friday in the second and third rounds of the draft and Saturday in rounds 4-7 are two from Bakersfield. The better-known of the two is Phillip Thomas, who played quarterback for Bakersfield High's 2005 section championship team but has spent the last five years at Fresno State becoming one of the nation's top collegiate safeties. Bakersfield Christian graduate Ryan Clanton could get picked late in the draft.
And Virgin Galactic officials have long been closed-mouthed about exactly when they schedule test flights of their new rocketplane, SpaceShipTwo. In an interview published Tuesday by the Las Vegas Sun, Virgin's founder, Sir Richard Branson, said the six-passenger, two-pilot suborbital spaceship is scheduled to go faster than the speed of sound on Monday. That can only mean SpaceShipTwo is slated for its first rocket-powered test flight.
