North of the River Chamber of Commerce is looking for volunteers for the day Saturday. Between 6:45 a.m. and 9 a.m., eight volunteers are needed to set up street signs and barricades to close down a road for a car show. Optimal Hospice is sponsoring its annual food drive benefitting hospice care patients and their families during the holidays. Bags of food at Thanksgiving and Christmas are given to the families and Optimal needs help. Even those who don't have time to "volunteer" can contribute.

Community Action Partnership of Kern Food Bank is seeking volunteer drivers for the morning bread run, 7:30 a.m.-11 a.m. Set your own schedule, drive one or more days, be a backup driver, be a driver's helper. Love Inc. is looking for volunteers interested in assisting with general office duties such as answering phones, processing requests for assistance, photocopying, faxing, filing and greeting people who come into the office, between 9 a.m. and noon. Kinship Support Services needs volunteers who play acoustic guitar to play background music at a special event Thursday, Nov. 8. The volunteer must have his or her own guitar and transportation. Call Lorrain at 377-0377. Kinship also is looking for someone to help keep food and drinks available for guests and to perform light clean-up duties -- no heavy lifting. White shirt and black pants are the attire.
The Cat People is recruiting volunteers to provide loving foster care for cats that are to be put up for adoption. The cats are waiting for spaying or neutering surgeries, making them temporarily unavailable for adoption. Foster care is needed for two to four weeks at a time and food is provided. If you enjoy getting outdoors, volunteers are needed to feed the feral cat (homeless) colonies in various locations. Food is provided. Orientation and training are provided. Kern County Homeless Collaborative needs help with its next Point-In-Time Count of Sheltered and Unsheltered Homeless Persons throughout Kern County, from the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 23, to the evening of Thursday, Jan. 24. It needs about 150 volunteers who are 18 years old or older to help count the homeless who will be staying in shelter on that night, and/or go out in teams of three to four people throughout Kern County all day long on Jan 24 to count homeless people who are sleeping outdoors -- in parks, by the river, under bridges, etc. Go to www.kernhomeless.org or call Louis Medina at 834-2734.
The Bakersfield Homeless Center needs donations of non-perishable food items to help those in need. The center gives individuals food baskets to help make ends meet. The needed items are pasta, beans, rice, canned vegetables, canned meats, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, cereal and coffee.
This year alone the center has provided food baskets to 825 individuals, an average of 92 per month. The food pantry is at a critical low -- sustaining current demand for food assistance, it needs to receive more than 3,000 items per month.
Donations can be made at the Bakersfield Homeless Center, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m.--4:30 p.m. at 1600 E. Truxtun Ave. Call Barbara Paulson at 322-9199 for more information.
