Outage doesn't stop wheels of justice

When the lights, and more importantly, the air conditioning, switched off in downtown Bakersfield Monday, everyone knew the dreaded days of summer were upon us.
But some refused to let the morning power outage derail their day.
Defense attorney Arturo Revelo was in the basement courtroom of Kern County Superior Court Judge Colette Humphrey when the lights went out.
"We were running on emergency power, then -- pop -- suddenly we're in the deepest dark I've seen since my divorce," Revelo said.
The lawyer figured Humphrey would postpone court business until the lights came back on. No dice.
"A deputy sheriff hands her a flashlight, and she proceeds to call the cases," Revelo said.
"This woman continued to work through her calendar until she was done," he said. "You don't see that anywhere. She was absolutely amazing."
