They make about 40 gallons of salsa a day, pleasing the taste buds of people who voted the salsa at Mexicali "Best Of" in an annual competition conducted by Bakersfield Life magazine.
The salsa category winner was revealed Wednesday on "First Look with Scott Cox."
Readers had the opportunity to vote on the "best of" in 108 categories in this 20th anniversary of the competition. In each, there are two "favorites" and one "best" winner. All winners will be revealed in the May issue of the magazine, which comes out Saturday.
"If you're talking about chips and salsa, these people's names are going to come up," host Scott Cox said. "It's money, every time," he added.
Said Irene Ramirez, the owner of Mexicali," "We pride ourselves on consistency."
Operations manager Michael Guerra, Ramirez's son, said restaurant staff roast and grind their own chile for the salsa every day.
"The people who make it have been there 30-plus years," Guerra said.
Bakersfield Life Managing Editor Jorge Barrientos noted Mexicali has two locations as he revealed it was the salsa winner.
