Mark your calendars for an event that will tickle your funny bone and help put a dent in Kern's animal overpopulation problem all at the same time.

The Friends of the Kern County Animal Shelters Foundation will hold a fundraiser for its spay/neuter voucher program on June 8.

The event is a dinner and comedy show featuring "Raise The Woof" stand up comics group.

Raise the Woof helps shelters and rescue groups nationwide raise money. It features three high-profile comics with credits from Comedy Central, HBO and other accomplishments.

Friends typically provides $2,000 worth of vouchers to the public per month and holds two mobile spay/neuter clinics each fall.

"This will help continue funding these programs," said Friends President Judi Daunell.

The voucher program started in mid-2012. The group gave out 277 vouchers in six months.

This year so far, Friends has given out 280 vouchers with waiting lists for people anxious to pick up vouchers in May and June.

The vouchers provide $20 toward the cost of altering cats and $30 toward the cost of fixing dogs.

That may not seem like a lot, but now that Bakersfield has a low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter clinic, Critters Without Litters, those vouchers go a lot further.

Spays/neuters of dogs at Critters cost from $80 to $65 depending on sex and weight. Cats cost $50 or $40 depending on sex.

So, in some cases, the Friends vouchers can cut costs by half, giving more people access to much-needed spay/neuter services.

Daunell said the vouchers, which expire if not used in two months from date of issue, have had a 62 percent redemption rate.

Tickets for the June 8 fundraiser will be sold at For the Birds and More, RedBrick Pizza and both Self Serve Pet Spa locations.

Tickets can also be purchased by mailing checks to Friends at P.O. Box 11494, Bakersfield, CA 93389.

Cost is $30 each or two for $50.

The event will be held at the Women's Club, 2030 18th St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Friends is also still looking for donations of goods or services for opportunity drawings and a silent auction at the show.
