Bakersfield hospital sends $50,000 to Haiti
By The Bakersfield Californian
San Joaquin Community Hospital in Bakersfield has sent a large donation to assist disaster-relief efforts in earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
On Friday, the nonprofit hospital wired $50,000 to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, a disaster relief organization that is currently working on the ground in Haiti, said San Joaquin Vice President Jerrod McNaughton.
Not only is the relief organization part of the hospital's network of Adventist services, there's also a 70-bed sister hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.
"I believe it's one of the only hospitals in the capital left standing," McNaughton said.
The No. 1 need right now is supplies, he said. The relief group will gather and route supplies to the hospital where they will be put to good use, including in emergency triage units set up on the grounds of an adjoining university.
McNaughton said San Joaquin was "blessed" to be in a position to help.
