MARE Riding Center is looking for hearty volunteers ages 14 to active retirees to help in horseback riding lessons, cleaning stalls, general maintenance, gardening upkeep and occasional office work. Mayor's Freeway Cleanup: Volunteers are needed to assist with de-littering the off/on-ramps of the freeway. Vests, helmets and trash bags are provided. Volunteers will meet at 8:45 a.m. Jan. 26 (this Saturday) at the Park & Ride lot on Stockdale Highway, west of Oak Street. Travel by bus/van to the various cleanup locations and return by 11 a.m. Mark your calendars for Feb. 9 and 23, March 9 and 23, April 6 and 20 and May 4 and 18. Optimal Hospice Care is holding an orientation for anyone interested in donating a little time and compassion to those affected by terminal illness. Bakersfield Homeless Center needs to fill in the kitchen volunteer calendar. Groups and families that are interested in serving dinner once a month are requested. Groups of four to six people, high school students, families with children 12 years of age and older are needed. Scheduled times are 4:15 p.m. to 6:16 p.m. Monday-Friday, 1600 E. Boys & Girls Club of Kern County is looking for mentors through the end of the school year, May 2013. Volunteers must commit to two hours per week, between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on a regular day and time to give children a sense of consistency. Volunteer orientations are held the first and third Tuesday of each month, background checks and fingerprinting are required for all volunteers over the age of 18.
