Worth noting in the community: Fitness equipment demonstration, more

If you've been itching to learn how to use the new fitness equipment at the Kern River Parkway, Saturday is your chance.
A free demonstration will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Kern River Parkway, according to a news release from the Bakersfield Department of Recreation and Parks. The parking lot near the equipment is on Truxtun Extension, just east of Commercial Way east of Mohawk Street.
Aaron Gillies of Pair & Marotta Physical Therapy will be on hand to demonstrate the recommended order and use of the new equipment, which makes up 11 exercise stations. Local company Ace Hydraulic Sales and Service, Inc. donated the new gear last year.
The equipment is free to use and open to the public during city parks hours from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., according to the news release.
The City of Bakersfield Animal Control Division is inviting the community to provide pets with rabies vaccinations and licensing.
From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, city Animal Control, along with Kern County Animal Control, will offer low-cost rabies vaccinations and licensing at the Park at Riverwalk, 10012 Stockdale Highway. Free microchips will also be offered to all currently licensed dogs.
The microchip cost is $10 for dogs without a current license. The electronic microchip effort is a program focused on reducing the number of impounded animals entering the shelter system and is becoming the preferred form of animal and owner identification.

Western Pacific Research and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will host a expo to promote healthy living later this month.
Muevete will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Jan. 16 at The Downtowner Expo Event Center, 1227 Chester Ave. Admission is $5 for adults, free for children. Some of the proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association, according to a news releases.
Booths will offer samples and registration for health-related programs, according to a Western Pacific Research news release. The event will also feature presentations by health workers in English and Spanish and activities for kids.
