Even though the sky looked like it would release a torrent of rain Saturday, Garden Fest-goers found a ray of sunshine in what they could learn to do to beautify their yards.

The Bakersfield College Horticulture Department held its ninth annual open house event Saturday, featuring garden seminars, the chance to talk to industry experts, cooking how-tos, 150 vendor booths, pet care information, carnival games and more.

It ran until 4 p.m. Saturday at the college's Renegade Park, on Mount Vernon Avenue north of Memorial Stadium.
