A Bakersfield man accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail through the front window of a southwest home pleaded not guilty Friday to charges including six counts of attempted murder.

Marco Gutierrez, 24, was ordered held in custody on $2 million bail. His next hearing is scheduled for April 30.

He made no comment other than to say he couldn't afford an attorney. Judge John S. Somers appointed the Public Defender's office to represent him.

Police arrested Gutierrez early Wednesday morning in connection with throwing a Molotov cocktail into a residence in the 6200 block of Landfair Drive just before midnight Tuesday. It extinguished itself upon impact.

A second Molotov cocktail was thrown but did not ignite. Police said two adults and four children were in the home at the time.

Two unlit Molotov cocktails were left behind. The motive for the attempted firebombing appeared to be related to domestic violence, according to police.

Kern County sheriff's deputies responded to a residence in the 700 block of Park Drive for a report of a shooting shortly after the incident. Evidence indicated Gutierrez and another person may have been responsible, but the other suspect has not been identified.

Gutierrez was arrested at Aldo's Night Club at 2:55 a.m. He's also charged with attempted arson and possessing a device to commit arson.

There are no other criminal cases listed against Gutierrez on the Kern County Superior Court website.
