The first five years of a child's life are essential to growth, development and learning. Those years set the tone for their physical, mental and emotional state and their readiness to start school.

The mission of First 5 Kern, which has 41 programs to support families in any area of life they need, is to support children and families.

Thursday on "First Look with Scott Cox," executive director Roland Maier talked about the organization.

Funding for First 5 Kern comes through Proposition 10 tobacco tax dollars, which the organization administers.

"I'm proud to be a part of this organization because we serve families in every community throughout Kern County," Maier said.

The organization focuses on three kinds of services: health and wellness, early childcare and education, and parent education and support services.
